UKMTO FIRING NOTICE: Live Weapon Firing Scheduled

  The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has issued a firing notice, informing mariners of a scheduled live weapon firing exercise. The exercise will take place between 03:00 UTC and 12:00 UTC on 29 February and 01 March 24 in an area bounded by an arc of radius 13,000 meters centered at 24-48.41N 066-57.36E between 225 to 270 degrees clockwise. Mariners are advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid the area during the scheduled firing times. All vessels within the exercise area are requested to monitor VHF frequency 16 or 22 and maintain a safe distance from the firing area.

Unreliable Lighthouse Light at Punta Chancay, Peru

The Peruvian Maritime Safety Information Coordinator has issued a warning about an unreliable lighthouse light at Punta Chancay, Peru. The lighthouse, known as HIDRONAV-222 and HIDRONAV-2223, is located in NAVAREA XVI 029/24, approximately 11°35'13.2"S 77°16'55.6"W. UKMTO Reports Maritime Incident Off Al Hudaydah, Yemen

Incident Possibly Caused by Houthi Attack, But Nothing Confirmed Yet On February 27, 2024, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) received a report of an incident 60 nautical miles west of Al Hudaydah, Yemen. The incident was reported by a commercial vessel. No further details are available at this time. The article will be updated as more information becomes available. The incident may have been caused by an attack by the Houthis, a rebel group that controls much of Yemen. The Houthis have attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea in the past. Distressed Canoe Off Senegal: Search Underway for Missing Crew Member

  A search is underway off the coast of Kafountine, Senegal, for a missing crew member after a canoe named "Takou Liggey Yalla Yana" capsized on February 27th, 2024, according to a distress message received via the Inmarsat system. The Senegalese Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Dakar) reported that the incident occurred between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM UTC (8:00 AM and 9:00 AM local time) at a location roughly 12 degrees 34 minutes North and 16 degrees 33 minutes West. While four crew members were successfully rescued, one remains missing, prompting MRCC Dakar to urge all mariners in the area to assist in the search and report any information to them directly.

Five Migrants Die During Rescue Operation in Malta: SAR Malta Calls for Public Inquiry

  Five migrants died on Friday, February 23, 2024 , after their boat capsized during a rescue operation by the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) in Maltese territorial waters. The survivors, including a pregnant woman, were taken to hospital for medical attention. However, 21 of the survivors were then taken to a detention center in Malta. SAR Malta, a network working to end pushbacks, non-assistance of people in distress, and other human rights violations at sea , condemned the loss of life and called for a public inquiry into the circumstances of these deaths. The organization also called for the immediate release of all survivors. SAR Malta said that the migrants were from Egypt, Syria, Ghana, and Eritrea and were seeking a better life and a safe haven. They added that the Maltese authorities have a responsibility under international law to rescue people in distress in their search and rescue zone. Suspicious activity by small boats spotted off Mubarak Al Kabeer, Kuwait

  The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Office (UKMTO) has received a report of three small boats, dark in color, with two persons onboard each, approximately 40 nautical miles (NM) south-east of Mubarak Al Kabeer, Kuwait. The Master of the merchant vessel reported that the small boats followed the merchant vessel for one hour at a distance of less than 1NM. No weapons or uniforms were visible. The Master and crew are safe. Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.

U.S. Navy Destroys Weapons in Red Sea Operation

 The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on February 26 that its forces destroyed three unmanned surface vessels (USV), two mobile anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCM), and a one-way attack unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in an operation in the Red Sea. The operation took place between the hours of 4:45 p.m. and 11:45 a.m. (Sanaa time). According to a CENTCOM spokesperson, the vessels and missiles were "posing a threat to maritime commerce and freedom of navigation." The destruction of the weapons was part of a "demonstration of the U.S. military's ability to defend against advanced weapons and deter aggression," the spokesperson said.
