Four Refugees Jump Overboard to Escape Libyan Coast Guard: Rescued by Humanitarian Ship Madleen

UPDATE 05/06/2025 15:30
A Frotex Vessel has recovered the 4 migrants rescued by the Madleen vessel which has resumed its route.

On June 5, 2025, the ship Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla, received a call from Frontex to assist a vessel in distress in the central Mediterranean, reportedly carrying around 40 people fleeing from Sudan. According to the United Nations, Sudan is currently experiencing a severe humanitarian and displacement crisis.

After approximately two hours of navigation, the Madleen reached the indicated area. Shortly after, a patrol boat approached the distressed vessel. According to the Madleen crew, the patrol initially identified itself as part of the Egyptian coast guard, but was later recognized as belonging to the Libyan coast guard.

Four individuals from the distressed vessel jumped into the sea and swam toward the Madleen, where they were rescued by the crew and brought on board. They are currently receiving assistance aboard the humanitarian ship.

Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan, who is currently aboard the Madleen, has issued an appeal to Greek authorities to allow the disembarkation of the four rescued individuals in a safe Greek port, so they can receive appropriate care and protection.

The appeal was addressed in particular to the Greek Minister of Shipping, Vassilis Kikilias (@Vkikilias), and more broadly to the international community, calling for compliance with maritime law and international conventions regarding rescue operations and the protection of shipwrecked individuals.
