Man Overboard Reported from Crude Oil Tanker ATHINA I in Indian Ocean

Location: Indian Ocean, approximately at Latitude 16.04°N, Longitude 059.53°E

An urgent distress signal has been issued after a man overboard incident was reported from the crude oil tanker ATHINA I (IMO: 9071818). The vessel, sailing under the flag of St. Kitts and Nevis, sent a DSC distress alert requesting assistance in the search and rescue operation.

At 21:28 UTC on January 29, 2025, the merchant vessel ATHINA I reported a man overboard emergency at 16.04°N, 059.53°E. A previous distress message at 21:15 UTC from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) UK indicated the incident occurred at 16.06°N, 059.55°E

The distress call was classified as MAYDAY, and all vessels in the vicinity have been requested to assist immediately.

Emergency Response & Coordination

The Muscat Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) is leading the search operation and has requested:

  • All ships in the vicinity to maintain a sharp lookout.

  • Vessels able to assist to proceed to the distress location.

  • Any findings or reports to be communicated directly to Muscat MRCC.

Vessel Information

The ATHINA I is a 243.27-meter-long crude oil tanker with a width of 41.8 meters. It was built under the IMO registration 9071818 and is actively engaged in maritime operations.

  • Wind speed: 10 knots, gusting up to 13 knots from the northeast.

  • Sea conditions: Slight waves.

  • Visibility: Good.

Search and Rescue Operation for Overdue Aircraft in Ligurian Sea

Issued by IMRCC Rome - Italian Coast Guard Date: September 17, 2024 To: All Ships Transiting in the Ligurian Sea  A white and grey aircraft with blue stripes is overdue and a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation has been initiated.  In accordance with the SOLAS Convention and the SAR Convention Hamburg 1979, all vessels transiting in the Ligurian Sea are urged to maintain a sharp lookout for the missing aircraft. Any potential sightings should be reported immediately to IMRCC Rome. Weather Conditions: Be advised that current weather conditions in the Ligurian Sea include northeasterly winds of 20 knots with waves up to 2 meters high. Weather is expected to worsen in the coming hours. The overdue aircraft and worsening weather conditions make this a time-sensitive search and rescue operation. The Italian Coast Guard implores all vessels in the area to actively participate in the search and report any potential sightings as soon as possible.
