Russian Shadow Tanker Cordelia Moon Blocks Bosphorus Strait After Engine Failure

A crude oil tanker, the Cordelia Moon, believed to be part of Russia's "shadow fleet," blocked traffic in the Bosphorus Strait on Thursday, December 26th, after suffering engine failure. The incident forced Turkish authorities to completely close the strait, according to the country's Ministry of Transport.

The Cordelia Moon, which was reportedly sailing under a Panamanian flag, was on its way to the Russian port of Novorossiysk when the incident occurred. This is not the first time the tanker has been in the news. In October 2024, while under Indian management, the Cordelia Moon was attacked twice by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea.

Social media users have been discussing the incident, with some speculating on the cause of the engine failure. Some reports suggest the issue has been resolved and the tanker is now expected to arrive in Novorossiysk on December 28th at 10:00 AM.

Here are some key points from the social media discussion:

  • The Cordelia Moon is a crude oil tanker built in 2006.
  • The tanker is believed to be part of Russia's "shadow fleet," which consists of vessels used to transport Russian oil without necessarily being directly linked to Russia.
  • The incident caused a complete blockage of traffic in the Bosphorus Strait, a crucial waterway for international shipping.
  • The cause of the engine failure is not yet confirmed.
  • The tanker was previously attacked by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea.
