U.S. Coast Guard Seeks Assistance Following White Flare Sighting

 

The United States Coast Guard's Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) Norfolk is requesting the assistance of mariners in the area following a report of a white flare sighted at sea.

Details of the Incident:

  • Date & Time Reported: November 14, 2024, at 5:30 AM UTC (November 13, 2024, at 10:30 PM EST)
  • Location: 19 degrees, 14.89 minutes North, 41 degrees, 18.65 minutes West (19-14.89N 041-18.65W)

Possible Distress Signal:

A single white flare was reported at the above-mentioned location. White flares are commonly used as distress signals at sea.

Weather Conditions at Last Reported Location:

  • Wind: Southeasterly at 17 knots with gusts up to 23 knots
  • Waves: 2.4 meters (8 feet)
  • Sky: Clear

The U.S. Coast Guard is requesting all mariners transiting through this area to:

  • Maintain a sharp lookout for any signs of distress, such as people in the water or a vessel in trouble.

  • If possible, render assistance to anyone in need.

  • Immediately report any sightings or information related to this incident to RCC Norfolk .

Mayday! Boat in Distress Near Capraia Island.

  Rome, Italy – July 3, 2024 – An urgent search and rescue (SAR) operation is underway near Capraia Island after a distress call was received by the Italian Coast Guard. The boat in distress, believed to be named "Antalia" or "Altalaia," has reportedly suffered engine failure. The Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (IMRCC Rome) has issued a distress alert to all vessels transiting the area, which is defined as a 30 nautical mile radius centered at 43.0N, 10.0E. The alert urges mariners to maintain a sharp lookout and report any possible sightings to IMRCC Rome immediately. Weather conditions in the area are reported as winds up to 14 knots from the North with gusts up to 21 knots, and a wave height of 0.8 meters. The Italian Coast Guard is coordinating the search and rescue efforts in accordance with the SOLAS and SAR conventions. The Italian Coast Guard is urging all mariners in the area to assist in the search and rescue efforts.
