Mysterious EPIRB Activation in South African Waters

Cape Town, South Africa – November 18, 2024
– Maritime authorities in Cape Town have issued an urgent alert following the activation of an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) in the early hours of Sunday morning. The distress signal originated from a vessel with the Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number 630114348, pinpointing its location at 30°30.00'S 034°00.00'E.

However, a thorough search of maritime databases has revealed that the MMSI number is not registered to any known vessel. This intriguing discrepancy has prompted a comprehensive search and rescue operation in the vicinity.

Vessel Search Underway

All vessels operating in the area have been requested to maintain a sharp lookout and report any signs of distress to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Cape Town.

Favorable Weather Conditions

Despite the unusual circumstances, weather conditions in the search area are currently favorable, with a forecast for improvement in the coming hours. Winds are blowing from the northeast at 15 knots with gusts up to 21 knots, the sky is clear, and sea conditions are moderate with waves of 2.6 meters. The air temperature is a warm 34°C.
