Tensions Rise as China Conducts Military Drills Around Taiwan

 In a move that has heightened tensions in the region, China began a new round of military exercises around Taiwan on Monday. Taiwan responded by mobilizing its armed forces and issuing radio warnings to Chinese vessels approaching its territorial waters.


The Chinese drills, codenamed "Joint Sword 2024B," come amidst growing concerns about China's intentions towards Taiwan, which it claims as a breakaway province. Taiwan, on the other hand, views itself as a self-governing democracy.

Taiwan's President, Lai Ching-te, convened a high-level security meeting in response to the drills. The Taiwanese military placed outlying islands on "heightened alert" and deployed patrol boats to monitor Chinese movements.

Chinese Coast Guard Vessels Expelled

Taiwan's Coast Guard reported issuing radio warnings and attempting to intercept four Chinese coast guard ships that ventured close to Taiwanese waters. Four Chinese coast guard ships were reportedly expelled from the area.

International Reactions

The international community is watching the situation closely. Portugal's public broadcaster, RTP Notícias, reported on Taiwan's mobilization efforts. Meanwhile, India Narrative reported that the Indian government is closely monitoring developments.

The exact purpose and duration of China's military drills remain unclear. While some social media users are calling for war, it is important to note that no official statements from either China or Taiwan suggest an imminent conflict. However, the situation remains tense and could escalate further.

Search and Rescue Operation for Overdue Aircraft in Ligurian Sea

Issued by IMRCC Rome - Italian Coast Guard Date: September 17, 2024 To: All Ships Transiting in the Ligurian Sea  A white and grey aircraft with blue stripes is overdue and a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation has been initiated.  In accordance with the SOLAS Convention and the SAR Convention Hamburg 1979, all vessels transiting in the Ligurian Sea are urged to maintain a sharp lookout for the missing aircraft. Any potential sightings should be reported immediately to IMRCC Rome. Weather Conditions: Be advised that current weather conditions in the Ligurian Sea include northeasterly winds of 20 knots with waves up to 2 meters high. Weather is expected to worsen in the coming hours. The overdue aircraft and worsening weather conditions make this a time-sensitive search and rescue operation. The Italian Coast Guard implores all vessels in the area to actively participate in the search and report any potential sightings as soon as possible.
