Super Typhoon Kong-Rey Makes Landfall in Taiwan, Leaving Trail of Destruction

Taipei, Taiwan - October 31, 2024 - Super Typhoon Kong-rey, one of the most powerful storms to hit Taiwan in decades, slammed into the island's eastern coast on Thursday afternoon, bringing heavy rains, violent winds, and widespread damage.

According to reports from the Central Weather Administration (CWA), Kong-rey made landfall in Taitung County with maximum sustained winds of 184 kilometers per hour (114 miles per hour) and gusts reaching nearly 300 kilometers per hour (186 miles per hour). The typhoon triggered evacuations, caused at least one confirmed fatality, and injured at least 73 people.
