Sailor Missing at Sea in Bissau-Guinean Waters

A distress call from Inmarsat has alerted the maritime community to the disappearance of a sailor, Li Cayou, a Chinese national. Li was a crew member aboard the Tian Yi He 6, a Fishery Patrol Vessel sailing under the flag of Dominica.


The incident occurred in Bissau-Guinean waters at the approximate position of 11°50’N 017°26’W on August 7, 2024, at 11:57:52 UTC. All vessels transiting this area are urged to keep a sharp lookout and report any sightings to the appropriate maritime authorities.

Vessel Details

The Tian Yi He 6 (IMO: 8698633) is a specialized vessel designed for fisheries enforcement. Despite its role, the circumstances surrounding Li Cayou's disappearance remain unclear.

Weather Conditions

At the time of the incident, the region was experiencing moderate weather conditions. Winds were reported from the Southwest at 12 knots with gusts up to 15 knots. Sea surface temperature was around 27°C, and wave heights reached up to 1.5 meters. Intermittent rain was observed, with forecasts predicting heavier rainfall in the coming hours.

Search and Rescue Operation for Overdue Aircraft in Ligurian Sea

Issued by IMRCC Rome - Italian Coast Guard Date: September 17, 2024 To: All Ships Transiting in the Ligurian Sea  A white and grey aircraft with blue stripes is overdue and a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation has been initiated.  In accordance with the SOLAS Convention and the SAR Convention Hamburg 1979, all vessels transiting in the Ligurian Sea are urged to maintain a sharp lookout for the missing aircraft. Any potential sightings should be reported immediately to IMRCC Rome. Weather Conditions: Be advised that current weather conditions in the Ligurian Sea include northeasterly winds of 20 knots with waves up to 2 meters high. Weather is expected to worsen in the coming hours. The overdue aircraft and worsening weather conditions make this a time-sensitive search and rescue operation. The Italian Coast Guard implores all vessels in the area to actively participate in the search and report any potential sightings as soon as possible.
