Tropical Storm "IALY"

A moderate tropical storm named "IALY" is currently located within a 20 nautical mile radius of 9.1 degrees South, 51.9 degrees East (approximate coordinates). The storm is moving westward at 4 knots (nautical miles per hour).

Areas Affected:

  • Squally weather within a 100 nautical mile radius of the center, extending up to 250 nautical miles in the southeastern quadrant.
  • Gale force winds (35-40 knots) and very rough to high seas extending up to 60 nautical miles in the southeastern quadrant and up to 70 nautical miles in the southwestern quadrant.
  • Near gale force winds (30 knots) and rough to very rough seas extending up to 40 nautical miles from the center, then extending further outward to 70 nautical miles in the northeastern quadrant, 110 nautical miles in the southeastern quadrant, and 130 nautical miles in the southwestern quadrant.
  • Strong gusts can be expected under squalls.

  • In 12 hours (Friday, May 17, 2024 at 12:00 UTC), the storm is expected to be located near 9.0 degrees South, 51.1 degrees East with maximum sustained winds of 40 knots.
  • In 24 hours (Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 00:00 UTC), the storm is expected to be located near 8.9 degrees South, 50.2 degrees East with maximum sustained winds of 40 knots.

The Dramatic Ordeal of M/V CHRISTINA DEBORA: From Mechanical Failure to Abandonment in the Mid-Atlantic

In June 2025, the standby safety vessel CHRISTINA DEBORA , 38.77 meters in length, experienced a maritime emergency that culminated in its abandonment in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean after drifting powerless for more than two weeks. The vessel had been sold and reflagged to Zanzibar either shortly before or just after leaving South Africa. The Beginning of the Crisis – June 8, 2025 The ordeal began on Sunday, June 8, when CHRISTINA DEBORA , navigating approximately 300 nautical miles northwest of St. Helena Island, suffered a major clutch failure, completely losing propulsion.
