Weather warning issued on April 7th, 2024, at 7:52 PM UTC. Iimportant information for maritime areas including Faraday, East of Romeo, Charcot, Pazenn, Iroise, Yeu, Finisterre, and Agadir.

General Synopsis:

  • A low-pressure system named "Pierrick" is currently located at 42N 19W and is deepening as it moves northeast.
  • A new Atlantic disturbance will be crossing the Faraday and Altair regions later.
  • A low-pressure area is expected to form over southwest Algeria with an associated trough extending towards Morocco.
  • A high-pressure system is building northeast and will bring calmer conditions to some areas.

Specific Warnings:

  • Faraday: Expect southerly or southeasterly winds of force 8 ( Beaufort scale ) in the east starting from 6:18 PM UTC on April 8th and lasting until at least 9:00 AM UTC on April 9th. Severe gusts are possible.
  • East of Romeo: Northwesterly winds of force 8 are expected in the extreme east until 6:12 PM UTC on April 8th. Severe gusts are possible.
  • Charcot: Cyclonic winds of force 8 are expected in the extreme northeast until 6:06 PM UTC on April 8th. Severe gusts are possible.
  • Pazenn: Expect cyclonic winds of force 8 or 9 from the south, increasing to force 10 with severe gusts in the north later. Winds will then veer northwesterly at force 8 or 9 near the end of the period. Severe gusts are likely throughout.
  • Iroise: Southerly or southwesterly winds of force 8 will transition to westerly winds of force 9 or 10 in the afternoon before becoming northwesterly force 8 in the evening. Expect violent gusts throughout the period.
  • Yeu: Westerly winds of force 8 with severe gusts are expected from 6:09 PM UTC on April 8th until at least 9:00 AM UTC on April 9th.
  • Finisterre: Southwesterly winds of force 8 with severe gusts are expected until 6:06 PM UTC on April 8th.
  • Agadir: Northerly or northeasterly winds of force 8 are expected in the east from 6:12 PM UTC on April 8th and lasting until at least 9:00 AM UTC on April 9th. Severe gusts are possible.

The Dramatic Ordeal of M/V CHRISTINA DEBORA: From Mechanical Failure to Abandonment in the Mid-Atlantic

In June 2025, the standby safety vessel CHRISTINA DEBORA , 38.77 meters in length, experienced a maritime emergency that culminated in its abandonment in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean after drifting powerless for more than two weeks. The vessel had been sold and reflagged to Zanzibar either shortly before or just after leaving South Africa. The Beginning of the Crisis – June 8, 2025 The ordeal began on Sunday, June 8, when CHRISTINA DEBORA , navigating approximately 300 nautical miles northwest of St. Helena Island, suffered a major clutch failure, completely losing propulsion. Seven crew members were onboard at the time. The distress call was officially reported by MRCC NATAL on June 11: the vessel was adrift and urgently required clutch repair parts as well as potable water.
