The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued an advisory on March 6, 2024, reporting an incident of irregular activity in the Red Sea near the location 12°12.51′N, 44°10.18′E.
According to the advisory, a merchant vessel was hailed over VHF radio for approximately 30 minutes by an entity claiming to be the Yemeni Navy. The entity allegedly ordered the vessel to alter its course in the vicinity of 50 nautical miles southwest of Aden, Yemen.UKMTO advises all vessels transiting the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity to their organization.
This incident highlights the ongoing security concerns in the Red Sea, particularly off the coast of Yemen. Tensions have been rising in the region due to the ongoing conflict and recent threats by the Houthi militia to control maritime traffic in Yemeni waters.
